As a muscle shortens, the contraction is said to be concentric. A muscle performs positive work when it shortens from a mechanical standpoint. When muscle lengthens during contraction it is said to be eccentric. Mechanically speaking, because the muscle is lengthening it is considered to be performing negative work.
